Your restaurant memories

Anton's

My favorite restaurant of all time was Anton’s. I say “was” because it closed a couple of years ago. My memories go back to the mid-60’s. I was working at the old WBIG-AM as a copywriter.

My best friend, Becky, whom I called Beck, also worked there. At that time she and I were single moms and budgets were tight. We would splurge to go out to eat lunch at a restaurant only on Fridays.

Nancy Nisonger (left) in 1964 with WBIG radio station manager Alan Wannamaker and Nisonger’s best friend, Rebecca (Becky) Purgason. The two women worked together at the radio station and would eat lunch at Anton’s on Fridays.

Southern Lights

In 1984, I met three young men (Peter Hamilton, John Jones and Brad Semon) who in my opinion had complimentary talents to establish a successful restaurant.

They only needed a catalyst to focus their efforts. A small beer pub near UNCG was available for lease since the age for beer consumption had risen to 21. But the building needed a lot of work. We gambled and borrowed the money to sign a three year lease. Lots of work ensued converting a beer pub into a restaurant.

Tex & Shirley’s

I have very fond memories of Tex & Shirley’s at Friendly Shopping Center. Both of my grown children ate there in high chairs and then booster seats, as well as my two grandchildren.

My family enjoyed many Christmas Eve breakfast and fellowship there, especially when my father would visit us from West Virginia for the holidays. We brought many out of town guests to enjoy our favorite restaurant. There was something warm and cozy about that restaurant, as well as an exhilarating way to start the day.

Carriage House

The Carriage House Restaurant at 4608 W. Market Street was the first restaurant located at this site and was one of the first up-scale restaurants in Greensboro.

It was owned and operated by the Rogers and Newcomer families. Coit B. Rogers had formerly been the assistant manager at Starmount Country Club when he decided to strike out on his own. He and his family built the building — as kids we played at the construction site until my friend (his stepdaughter) fell and broke her arm climbing around. I know the workers must have loved his kids messing around there. He hired a German chef, Herbert Hoos.

Boar & Castle

Boar & Castle! How I wish someone would open that restaurant again. I am never without their sauce but what I would pay for one of those buttery steak sandwiches or castle burgers!

Casey's

One of my favorite childhood memories was (back in the '50s), going to lunch after church to Casey’s on Friendly Avenue. My father would order fried chicken and my mother would order vegetables, since she grew up on a farm and was traumatized by the sight of what happened to her “pet” chicken. They would have the waitress bring me an empty plate and they would share their food with me. While we waited for our food to arrive, I would eat a couple of the little wrapped pats of butter that was already on the table.

We only ate out on Sundays, so that was especially special for me.

Darryl’s

Hey! I’d like to tell you about my favorite restaurant of all - I still miss it to this day. Darryl’s restaurant on Church Street near State Street was our go to — as a young girl growing up, to dates for appetizers and drinks. The atmosphere was amazing and fun. I had heard Darryl’s might be opening at the old Hams Lakeside on Cone Boulevard. I hope this will happen.

- Kim Hoag

Sunset Cafe

My absolute favorite restaurant was Sunset Cafe (unfortunately now closed). It opened in 1976 on Spring Garden Street and years later moved to West Market.

Started by Marty and Kim Goldstein. They specialize in poultry and seafood and their fresh vegetable were the best. As an appetizer, they served something called Logan Bread — a very dense dark molasses bread. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The salmon was fabulous, served with the best mashed potatoes.

Peppermill

My family moved to Greensboro in 1977. My husband was with Burlington Industries and had accepted a position on their corporate staff at 3330 W. Friendly Avenue. He frequented a restaurant in a strip shopping center off I-40 entertaining business clients. The Peppermill soon became a favorite of ours too. Their Veal Oscar as it was outstanding.

On an Aug. 5th in the early '80s, we were painting our house. It was about 8:30 pm and getting too dark to continue, so we wrapped it up for the day. As the two of us, hot, dirty and paint covered came inside, it hit us both at the same time. IT'S OUR ANNIVERSARY!

223 downtown

Most memorable restaurant we’ve ever eaten at in Greensboro was 223 downtown. My husband and I would have dinner there then go across the street for a Triad Stage play and come back afterwards for a coffee and an espresso pot’de creme (which was out of this world delicious!).

When their first chef left and went to work for Grandover, we missed him greatly but then Chef Jason arrived and was spectacular. They were one of the first restaurants here to provide “farm to table” food at mostly reasonable prices. The food was fantastic and the service impeccable.

Friendly Road Inn

I fondly remember Friendly Road Inn. Always a family favorite and the go-to Friday Night place.

I remember standing in a long line to get one of the huge eight-person booths every time we went. As a child, it never really bothered me much, but would exasperate my dad.

Nick Bartis lists restaurants of yesteryear

I am writing on behalf of Nick Bartis, my 89-year-old father who saw your call for restaurant memories. He made a list.

Dad moved here in his early adolescence from New York. His parents were Greek immigrants, so you know he grew up in a restaurant culture. Many of the restaurateurs of the places below are Greek.
