Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs – SPHL Hockey

Moline, Ill. – Despite striking first, the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs (0-2-2-0) fell to the Quad City Storm (3-0-0-1), 5-2, on Friday night at Vibrant Arena at The MARK.

For the first time this season, Roanoke opened the scoring. The Dawgs tested Quad City goaltender Andrei Filonenko early before Caden Pattison found the back of the net at the 2:22 mark for his first goal of the season.

Roanoke found itself in penalty trouble during the opening period. Zack Jones was called for a faceoff violation at the 6:05 mark before True Crowe was sent to the penalty box for tripping at 7:07, giving Quad City a two-man advantage.

The Storm capitalized on the 5-on-3 opportunity as Leif Mattson scored his first goal of the season at 7:18 to even the score at 1-1. It marked the first power-play goal conceded by the Dawgs this season.

Quad City took its first lead of the night in the second period. Mattson was assessed a tripping penalty at the 7:20 mark, but the Storm turned the tables while shorthanded. Devin Sanders found the back of the net to give Quad City a 2-1 advantage.

Charlie Belanger added to the Storm’s lead later in the period, scoring his first goal of the season to send Quad City into the second intermission with a 3-1 advantage.

Despite outshooting the Storm 14-7 in the middle frame, Roanoke could not capitalize on its opportunities, finishing the period 0-for-3 on the power play.

Belanger struck again just 46 seconds into the third period, scoring his second goal of the night during 4-on-4 play to extend the Storm’s lead to 4-1.

The Dawgs responded in the final 10 minutes as the newest Rail Yard Dawg Jones found the back of the net on the power play. Connor Bertamini and Manny Cabral picked up the assists to cut the deficit to 4-2.

However, Quad City answered once more as Stefan Diezi scored the Storm’s fifth goal of the night to cap the scoring at 5-2.

The Storm outshot Roanoke 33-26, including a 17-6 advantage in the third period. The Dawgs finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play, while Gage Alexander turned aside 28 shots in the loss.

Roanoke concludes its road trip in Moline on Saturday, October 31, with a 3:10 p.m. puck drop. The Dawgs return to the road Thursday, November 5, for a school-day morning matchup against Fayetteville inside Crown Coliseum. Puck drop is scheduled for 10 a.m. Roanoke returns home Friday, November 6, to host the Pensacola Ice Flyers for Stick It to Cancer Night, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Season tickets, ticket packages and group tickets are available through the Rail Yard Dawgs front office. Single-game tickets can be purchased online or at Berglund Center box office.
