Branching out through community

At Hickory City Schools, we believe that strong schools and strong communities go hand in hand. Some of the most meaningful opportunities for our students and families happen when we come together beyond the classroom to learn, celebrate, build relationships, and support one another.

This month, I am excited to recognize Ridgeview Recreation Center and Ridgeview Branch Library as our November Branching Out Community Partner Spotlight. These two valued community resources play an important role in bringing people together, creating opportunities for our students and families, and strengthening the connections that make Hickory such a special place to live and learn.

A community rich in history

To truly appreciate Ridgeview today, we must recognize the remarkable history of the community it serves.

Located just south of downtown Hickory, Ridgeview has deep roots as the city's first African American neighborhood, dating back to the 19th century. Over generations, it grew into a close-knit community with thriving businesses, churches, schools, and gathering places that helped shape Hickory's history.

Education has always been an important part of that story. Ridgeview High School, once part of Hickory City Schools, was a source of tremendous community pride, known for both its academic excellence and athletic achievements. Its graduates went on to pursue higher education and successful careers as educators, medical professionals, attorneys, and leaders in their communities.

The school's athletic legacy is equally remarkable, including the legendary 1964 Ridgeview Panthers football team, known as the "Untouchables," which completed an undefeated season without allowing a single point.

Although Ridgeview High School closed in 1966 during school integration, its legacy continues through the generations of students, educators, families, and community members who helped build it.

Today, Ridgeview Recreation Center and Ridgeview Branch Library continue that tradition of providing places where people can gather, learn, celebrate, and connect.

Growing together

Our partnership with Ridgeview Recreation Center is a strong example of what happens when schools and community organizations work together.

From holiday traditions like Lunch with Santa to programs such as Rec Buddies at Grandview Middle School and the PEEPs play group, Ridgeview Recreation Center helps create experiences that bring joy, learning, and connection to our students and families.

We also appreciate the opportunities to participate in community celebrations, including Ridgeview's Back-to-School Bash and Trunk-or-Treat Fall Festival. These events give our district another opportunity to connect with families, celebrate alongside our community, and build relationships outside the traditional school setting.

Ridgeview Recreation Center also provides a welcoming space for district and community meetings. These gatherings allow us to listen, share information, and maintain open communication with the people we serve.

What makes this partnership so special is that it extends beyond individual events or programs. It is built on relationships, trust, and a shared commitment to supporting children and families.

Learning beyond the classroom

Right next door to Ridgeview Recreation Center, Ridgeview Branch Library provides another important connection to learning and opportunity. Together, these neighboring facilities serve as a hub for recreation, education, and community engagement, offering valuable resources and experiences for children and families.

As part of the Hickory Public Library system, Ridgeview Branch Library offers books, educational resources, technology, and programs for children and adults. The library's renovation and expansion, completed in 2021, created additional spaces for learning, studying, and community gatherings.

One resource is the Rootle Discovery Corner, which offers free books, literacy games, STEM activities, and hands-on learning materials designed to encourage curiosity and early learning through play.

The library also offers opportunities for families to strengthen reading habits through programs such as 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, helping our youngest learners develop a love of books before they begin school.

These resources complement the work happening in our classrooms and remind us that learning does not stop when the school day ends.

The impact of community connections

What I appreciate most about our relationship with Ridgeview Recreation Center and Ridgeview Branch Library is the genuine sense of community that surrounds their work.

Whether our students are participating in a recreation program, families are attending a community celebration, young children are discovering new books, or district representatives are gathering with residents, each experience creates another opportunity to strengthen relationships.

These partnerships also allow us to be present in the community in meaningful ways. We want our families to see Hickory City Schools not only inside our school buildings, but also alongside them at the events, celebrations, and gathering places that matter to them.

Those relationships help us better understand and serve our community.

Why this partnership matters

Our theme this year is Branching Out, and Ridgeview represents that spirit in a meaningful way.

The history of Ridgeview reminds us of the importance of strong roots, while the programs and opportunities offered today demonstrate how those roots continue to support new generations.

When we branch out beyond our classrooms and into our community, we create more opportunities to connect with families, celebrate our shared history, and support the growth and success of our children.

We are fortunate to have partners who understand that building a strong community means investing in relationships and creating spaces where people can come together.
