In the summer of 1970, 14-year-old Curtis Ross Turner spent a lot of time in and around Roanoke with his famous father, Curtis Turner, who had emerged from the back country of Floyd County, Va., after World War II to become one of the most flamboyant, fiery and fun-loving drivers in the 50-year history of stock car racing.
