Folk festivals elsewhere
When the National Folk Festival moves on from Greensboro after 2017, Greensboro plans to continue it as the North Carolina Folk Festival. Here is a look at three folk festivals that began as the National Folk Festival and continue as locally-run events.
RICHMOND FOLK FESTIVAL
Where: Richmond, Va. Website: richmondfolkfestival.org
History: National Folk Festival 2005-2007. Became the Richmond Folk Festival run by Venture Richmond, a nonprofit downtown organization, in 2008.
2016 dates: Oct. 7-9
Estimated attendance: More than 200,000 in 2015.
2015 cost: $1.6 million expenses; $1.5 million income, including cash and in-kind contributions. Private sponsorships totaled $620,000. "We always subsidize this event from other sources internally," festival Director Lisa Sims said.
2015 contributions to bucket brigade: $122,000. Suggests $10 contribution per person per day.
Estimated economic impact: Venture Richmond has not collected data.
Source: Venture Richmond.
LOWELL FOLK FESTIVAL
Where: Lowell, Mass. Website: lowellfolkfestival.org
History: National Folk Festival 1987-1989. Became locally-run Lowell Folk Festival in 1990.
2016 dates: July 29-31
Estimated attendance: 130,000
Cost: About $1.1 million in cash and in-kind services. "This was a record year in the amount of money we raised because of our 30th anniversary," said Craig A. Gates, executive director of the nonprofit Lowell Festival Foundation. As in past four years, he expects a surplus, which goes toward other foundation events.

Bucket Brigade contributions: About $93,000. Suggests $20 contribution per person per day, $25 for families.
Estimated economic impact: About $25 million a year in years past. Surveyed attendees this year on festival-related spending, but results have not been compiled yet.
