ABOUT THE PHOTO

Former News & Record photographer Jerry Wolford shot a picture of Jim Clark in his office while on another assignment. Here's how Wolford remembers that photograph:

Back in December of 2014 I was walking the halls of UNCG when I stumbled across this office. I knew I had to meet a man with an office that foretold such great mystery. It was only a meeting of a few minutes, but I made a point to get in touch with Professor Clark a year or two later. I sent him a file of the image and he sent me some information for my caption. I came to really love this image and it is in my archive of the photos that I have artfully toned to express themselves as best as my craft has to offer. He emailed me some information about his life, and and in his words, a claim that his desk would be clean in December. I am saddened to think of all who will miss such a man.

Below is the caption from the image:

Jim Clark, director of the MFA Writing Program at UNCG, sits at what he calls, "ground zero" — his desk. Underneath the clutter Clark keeps a wooden sign proclaiming, "A clean desk is a sign of a sick mind." Clark says the highly ranked MFA creative writing program is one of the oldest in the nation — next year it will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Clark also edits the award-winning literary journal, The Greensboro Review, and before coming to UNCG, was the editor of The Greensboro Sun, an alternate "underground" newspaper that was prominent in the 1970s. Clark equates the program's success with his desk's mountain of applications, writing samples, submissions and books from his faculty. Clark says his spectacle is fleeting and seasonal. Clark wrote: "By early December when the trees have lost their fall leaves, my desk too will be bare — the paper shredded, recycled, and filed, the books resting on their shelves . . . just in time for the spring semester, and the mountain, to begin again."
