U.S. ARMY WORLD CLASS ATHLETE PROGRAM

Headquarters: Fort Carson, Colo.

Number of athletes: 46; six are in track and field.

A name we know: Sgt. First Class Dremiel Byers, an A&T alumnus from Kings Mountain, is a Greco-Roman wrestler who competed in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

Program superlatives: Since 1948, 446 Army soldiers have represented the United States at summer or winter Olympic Games as athletes or coaches. They have earned 111 medals.

A running goal:

"Right now I'm just trying to focus on bringing down my (5,000 meters) PR and running in the lower 13s or the next year maybe run under 13 minutes."

A long run:

"Mostly I would do like 17 miles, or 16 miles, and start with six-minute-a-mile, then drop to 5:25, then drop to like 5:20 and maintain 5:20 for a while, then the last three or four miles, drop to like 5:10, then the last mile drop to like 4:55, 4:50 or like 5-minute flat. That's how I get my endurance. The long run doesn't get beneficial if you start out at a faster pace and finish out slower. You've got to start out at a slower pace and pick up as time goes by, and when you get to the finish, that's how you get to be strong in a race. That's how you get the energy to push up into a race, like the last two laps, or the last one lap. That's the difference between a person who does that and the person who starts the long run fast, because they get to races, when the pace becomes faster toward the end, they get dropped, you know? If you do your long runs and you progress, when the race gets faster at the end, you're always there and you're always stronger at the end and you can hold up and keep up with those people. The only thing I worry about is the middle of the race. I don't worry about the end of the race because I know I'm always going to be there toward the last two laps or three laps."

On clean water and Kenya:

"With my public health degree, I want to improve their centers in Kenya and learn more about public health as a water treatment specialist. I'm going to try to see what they deal with and see how it works and see if I can work in Kenya one day with that career. Our main aim is to improve their standards back home.

"There's no access to clean water in most places in Kenya. My main goal, being a water treatment specialist, maybe with my running career and with my pay, I might start a water treatment plant in Kenya, you know? And start from there with the water treatment plant and make sure I supply clean water to the people and ensure the source where they get their water is clean. That's my goal.

"I would have access to clean water. But sometimes we would run out of water and we would go so far away. For example, I'd go out three miles and back three miles just to get access to clean water. My goal is to bring that clean water to them and make sure they don't think about looking for it. Pump the water from the rivers and the dams through the water treatment plant and be sure I can improve the standards back home."
