Shalane Flanagan will race in the women's marathon, beginning at 8:30 a.m. EDT Sunday, at the Rio Olympics.

- Set women's marathon world record (2:49:40) at Western Hemisphere Marathon, Culver City, Calif., Dec. 5, 1971; the record stood for two years.

- Graduated from North Central High School in Indianapolis in 1966; ran in the high school national cross country championships.
- In 1966, became the first female athlete in the history of the United States to earn an athletic scholarship to a public university, to Indiana State University.
