Forsyth startup banks
Winston-Salem has served as the launching pad for at least 14 startup banks, and Kernersville for two, according to the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council.
All but one, Piedmont Federal Savings Bank, have been bought by a larger bank.
1879: Wachovia Corp., bought in 2001 by First Union Corp., which was bought in 2008 by Wells Fargo & Co.
1903: Piedmont Federal Savings and Loan Association; it became a savings bank in 2007.
1903: Bank of Kernersville; bought by Wachovia in 1965.
1916: City National Bank of Winston-Salem; bought by First Union National Bank in 1962.
1925: Hood Systems Industrial Bank; became Bank of Winston-Salem in 1968 as part of becoming a commercial bank; bought by Bank of North Carolina, based in Jacksonville, in 1972, which was bought by NCNB in 1982; NCNB became Bank of America Corp.
1934: First Federal Savings and Loan Association; became a savings bank in 1988; bought by Southern National Corp. in 1992, which was bought by BB&T Corp. in 1995.
1934: First National Bank; bought by NCNB in 1961; NCNB became Bank of America Corp.
1973: Forsyth Bank and Trust Co.; bought by Southern National Corp. in 1981, which was bought by BB&T Corp. in 1995.
1973: United Citizens Bank; changed name to Citizens National Bank in 1982; bought in 1988 by Peoples Bancorp of Rocky Mount, which was bought by Centura Bank Inc. in 1990, which was bought by Royal Bank of Canada in 2001 and was known as RBC Centura and RBC Bank. RBC Bank was bought by PNC Financial Services Group in 2011.
