Start at Lee Street, walk along South Elm Street toward Market, and here are some of the 36 pieces of artistry. (The Google map is here.)

“Void Simulacrum”: This will be hard to miss. In the green space at the southeast corner of Lee Street at Elm, look for performers enveloped in a wide, 50-foot purple spandex band.

Willing spectators will become part of the work, shaping the band into changing forms.

“For me, it is very important that there is no script and strangers connect while

shaping this void,” said Bulgaria-born artist Kaloyan Ivanov.

“DanceLab”: Cross Lee Street to Elm, and walk along the left side to Elsewhere, the living museum in a former thrift store at 606 S. Elm St.

Dancers from Angela Robinson’s class at Dudley High School will perform at Elsewhere at 7 p.m. Nov. 1. New York choreographer Athena Kokoronis has worked with students to create the dance, with assistance from Elsewhere’s Chris Kennedy and a North Carolina Arts Council grant.

“Elm Street Memory”: In an alley in the 500 block across the street, between Civic Threads and Artistika Nightclub, UNCG art graduate student Katey Austin will hang collages depicting her memories of South Elm Street.

With bits of painted paper, she has abstractly re-created such scenes as Elsewhere, Cheesecakes by Alex, Loaf Bakery and an antiques shop. She will invite visitors to draw their own memories of Elm Street.

“Everyone will have a chance to be part of it,” Austin said, “which I think is what Art in Odd Places is all about.”

“10,000 Flowers for Willie Grimes”: In a traffic island before the railroad tracks, Atlanta artist Terry Hardy will use discarded graveyard flowers to create a flower field arranged in a traditional African quilt pattern.

The installation will honor the memory of the N.C. A&T student whose death brought international attention to the city’s racial instability in 1969.

“I imagine what might have come of his life, having grown up in such a volatile and turbulent time, and just what he might have taught us,” Hardy said. “His is a story that needs to be repeated time and again.”

“Which Way Again?” On Barnhardt Street near the railroad tracks, local sculptor Jim Gallucci will erect a 9-foot steel sculpture that evokes the many local highways traveled each day.

“55 Years of Change”: At the bust of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., walkers can veer off Elm Street onto Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and follow it to Gorrell Street and Bennett College.

Along the route, they will find drawings created by Bennett students of Harry Swartz-Turfle. They explore the social, political, technological and architectural events and structures that have changed since King spoke at Bennett in 1958.

Art in Odd Places gives his students the opportunity to participate in a community dialogue, Swartz-Turfle said.

“It will be interesting for my students, few of whom consider themselves natural artists, to stake a claim in engaging big questions in a public way.”

“Stitch-by-Stitch: A Numbered Meditation”: Cross the railroad tracks. On the sidewalk at Just Be, Chapel Hill artist Susan Harbage Page will draw a giant, colorful crocheted doily in chalk.

The number of stitches refer to labor that often becomes invisible when looking at pieces of handiwork, largely produced by women.

“Tarot de Marseille”: Swiss saxophonist Laurent Estoppey, who lives and works between Greensboro and Switzerland, will give 10-minute personalized performances at the future site of Scuppernong Books, 302 S. Elm St.

He will base them on British composer Charles Dakin’s “Tarot de Marseille,” 22 short pieces of music connected to the major arcana of the tarot. Each listener will draw seven cards to determine which Estoppey will play. Sign up at www.laurentestoppey.com/tarot.

“TAG! You’re It”: On the wall outside Thousands O’ Prints at 233 S. Elm St., UNCG art graduate student Stacy Bloom Rexrode will display her installation of crochet yarn, enameled silk flowers, shipping tags and diaper pins.

Each tag will include a statistic on women’s reproductive health and rights. Rexrode wants visitors to add tags with their personal stories.

“My intention is to provide an impetus for healing and awareness,” Rexrode said.

“Who are the Secret Nine?” Pedro Lasch will stencil that question in chalk on the sidewalk at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, 134 S. Elm St., and other locations.

Lasch, who teaches art at Duke University, hope that it prompts passersby to research the answer.

The Secret Nine refers to the only armed coup to demote an elected government in the U.S. It occurred in 1898 in Wilmington, when white supremacists illegally seized power from a fusionist white mayor and biracial city council. Black citizens were killed in the resulting turmoil.

“It’s a little known incident but hugely important,” Lasch said.

“Urban Oscillation”: A block off Elm Street, Georgia-based artists Ernesto R. Gomez and Zach Elliott will turn the Davie Street parking garage into a concert hall of sorts. The instruments: car horns.

At 8 p.m. Nov. 1 and 7 p.m. Nov. 2, a line of vehicles large and small will slowly wind its way from the top of the garage to the bottom, honking all the way.

Participants and observers will experience the magnification of sound as it intensifies and eventually fades into the urban landscape.

“You do not have to be musical to take part in this piece,” Gomez said. “All you need is a vehicle and a horn.”

To participate, email Gomez at egsculptor@gmail.com.
