The International Civil Rights Center and Museum gave out awards Saturday at its annual gala celebrating the 56th anniversary of the sit-ins in Greensboro.

Augusta Thomas is honored with the Sit-In Participant’s Award for her lifelong work for civil rights Saturday at the International Civil Rights Center & Museum. Thomas was a young wife and mother in 1960 when she traveled from Louisville, Ky., to join the sit-ins at the whites-only lunch counter at Woolworth’s in downtown Greensboro.

Greensboro museum recognizes civil rights leaders
“The fight is not over,” said award recipient Robert "Bob" Brown. “Sometimes we get relaxed and laid back. But there are too many roadblocks that are leftover."
In 1960, 4 young men sat at the Woolworth lunch counter in downtown Greensboro. They wanted to make a 'better world for all of us to live in.'
The Greensboro sit-ins happened 59 years ago Friday. Two of the living four participants remember some other events that took place around that historic occasion.
