Some EMF highlights
Following are season highlights. Unless stated otherwise, all performances are at 8 p.m. at Dana Auditorium, Guilford College:
- June 29: EMF Piano Gala performances by faculty members William Wolfram and Awadagin Pratt.
- June 30: Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg in recital. The first half of the program features Salerno-Sonnenberg, EMF's 2016 Tannenbaum-Sternberger Distinguished Teaching Artist, and EMF pianist Eunhye Grace Choi performing Gabriel Faure’s Violin Sonata No. 1, op.13 and other works for violin and piano. Salerno-Sonnenberg will be joined on the second half of the program by EMF’s 2016 String Fellowship program participants in performances of chamber works including Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite, op.40.
- July 1: Schwarz leads the Eastern Festival Orchestra and both EMF Young Artists Orchestras in a season opening celebration of Mozart. EMF Faculty artists Shannon Scott (clarinet), Anna Kate Mackle (harp) and Les Roettges (flute) will each be featured in concerto performances. Program will include Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, K.551 (Jupiter); Clarinet Concerto, K.622; and Flute and Harp Concerto in C Major, K.299
- July 2: Eastern Festival Orchestra opens the Joseph M. Bryan Jr. Festival Orchestra Series with works by Tchaikovsky and Brahms. Pratt will perform Brahms’ First Piano Concerto, book-ended by Tchaikovsky’s "Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy" and Symphony No. 5.
- July 6, First Presbyterian Church: Violinist Catherine Cary and cellist Neal Cary play a concert of Vivaldi and Italian baroque music.
- July 9: The Eastern Festival Orchestra performs Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, op. 55 and Dvořák’s Concerto for Violoncello in B minor, op. 104. Cellist Julian Schwarz solos.
- 9 p.m. July 13, Temple Emanuel: Greensboro Opera and EMF collaborate to present light operatic and popular song.
- July 15: EMF’s Young Artists Orchestras perform Prokofiev’s Lt. Kije Suite and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, op. 74.
- July 16: New York Philharmonic’s principal violist Cynthia Phelps and the Eastern Festival Orchestra premiere American composer Julia Adolpe’s Viola Concerto. Grammy-winning guitarist and EMF faculty member Jason Vieaux will perform Rodrigo’s Guitar Concerto.
- 6:30 p.m. July 17, Founder's Lawn, Guilford College: EMF’s Young Artists perform a free concert of popular and light classical music. Patrons are encouraged to picnic under the trees.
- July 21: The EMF Young Artists Orchestras perform Ravel’s "La Valse" and Strauss’ "Don Juan."
- July 23: The Eastern Festival Orchestra will premiere an orchestral work by André Previn. The program also will include Strauss’ Violin Concerto performed by guest artist James Ehnes and Prokofiev’s Symphony 5.
- July 24, various start times, Guilford College: EMF faculty and young artists will present a free, family-friendly celebration of music.
