Greensboro Opera

David Holley, general and artistic director of the nonprofit Greensboro Opera, said “It’s just an unusual confluence of this tragic opera and the tragedy that I faced. But I’ve got people surrounding me. I don’t think it’s an accident that I’m going to have an incredible support.”

Soprano Jill Gardner and tenor Cody Austin perform a scene during a rehearsal of “Madame Butterfly” on Oct. 23. Austin will make his debut with Greensboro Opera in the role of naval lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton, who marries Butterfly. Gardner, who sang the title role of Cio-Cio-san (“Madama Butterfly”) with Piedmont Opera and elsewhere, will also debut with the local company. Gardner lives in Kernersville but sings coast to coast.

Director David Holley watches a scene during a rehearsal of “Madame Butterfly” on Oct. 23. With fewer than three weeks to produce the opera, “It certainly helps that folks have done these roles before,” Holley said. “It lends a familiarity, but at the same time, it gives us a lot of chance to be creative and spontaneous.”
