Dick Douglas of Greensboro became an Eagle Scout on Dec. 8, 1925, and now holds the honor of being the country’s longest-tenured living Eagle Scout at 89 years.

Douglas’ photo appeared in the 1928 book he co-wrote, “Three Boy Scouts in Africa.” He and the other two boys, David Martin and Douglas Oliver, hunted wild game, took photos of lions, zebras and other animals and met and befriended natives on their trip. They also took notes, which became the basis of their book.

During the early 1900s, when Dick Douglas was a small child, his dad was chairman of the Court of Honor for the Boy Scouts, and his mother was a merit badge examiner.

Douglas wrote a number of books, including one detailing his trip to Alaska in “A Boy Scout in the Grizzly Country.” (right) He wrote his first book, “Thee Boy Scouts in Africa” with two other men. “The proceeds from that first book helped me finish college,” Douglas explained. In 1994, he wrote his autobiography, “The Best 90 Years of My Life.”
