Selby Chipman, a 16-year old Northwest Guilford High School student, will be among the first females in the nation to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout as part of Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouts of America). Her scout project involved creating a place to rest along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail in Oak Ridge.

After joining all-girl Troop 219G when it began in 2019, Selby Chipman has earned 30 merit badges, become SCUBA certified, received a National Outdoor Achievement Award, and led the design and construction of a Mountains-to-Sea Trail nature viewing area for her Eagle Service.

There are two other young women in Selby Chipman's troop — the so-named "groundbreaker patrol" — who are also in the finishing phases of completing their Eagle Scout. They are Alex Santiago and Caroline Ruppel.

The final step for Selby Chipman is a board review later this month. Since its inception in 1912, less than 10% of all eligible Scouts have become Eagle Scouts.

After joining all-girl Troop 219G when it began in 2019, she has earned 30 merit badges, become SCUBA certified, received a National Outdoor Achievement Award, and led the design and construction of a Mountains-to-Sea Trail nature viewing area for her Eagle Service.
