A Carter reunion in the 1980s at the family’s ancestral cabins near Wentworth. Carol Highsmith’s grandfather and great-grandfather were born here.

The Glade Creek Grist Mill, a fully operable mill was built in 1976 in West Virginia’s Babcock State Park as a re-creation, made from parts of three old mills, of Cooper’s Mill, which burned to the ground in the 1920s and ground grain on Glade Creek long before Babcock became a state park. The replacement building is one of the most-photographed structures in the state.

Dusk falls at a short fishing pier in Kitty Hawk, a community on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, a 200-mile-long string of barrier islands and spits off the coast that locals like to call the “OBX.”

Crystal Mill, an 1892 wooden powerhouse located on an outcrop above the Crystal River in what remains of an old mining town, Crystal, high in the Rocky Mountains in Gunnison County, Colorado. Although called a mill, it is more correctly a compressor station, which used a water turbine to drive an air compressor to run power machinery at nearby silver mines. While the Crystal Mill is often reputed to be the most photographed site in the state, this is logistically impossible, as it is reached by only two precarious high-mountain dirt roads, including one from the town of Marble that is pocked with ruts, and large stones and advisable for four-wheel-drive travel only. Whereas more than 400 people once lived in Crystal during its heyday in the early 20th Century (when the town even had two flourishing newspapers), fewer than 10 people — including the town “mayor” — live there today (2015), and then only in the summertime when Crystal is not snowbound.

WENTWORTH — “That’s it!” Carol Highsmith says as she points to two rustic log cabins along a rural roadside.

Highsmith as a child at Granny’s farm in Madison. Highsmith remembers the Rockingham County relatives and the food. “Granny would make fried pies and blueberry cobbler,” Highsmith said. “I remember her churning butter. ... We couldn’t wait to have our first Dr Pepper.”

Cowhands Scott McKay (on the white horse, Hays) and John Guthrie III (on Gunner), and Scott’s dog, Ty, cross the North Platte River at Park Range Ranch in North Park, Colo. (Coloradans in this remote part of the state, near the Wyoming line, call their valleys “parks.”) The Park Range is a spectacular series of Rocky Mountain peaks overlooking the “park.” This vast area, up dirt roads out of Walden, Colo., in Jackson County, one of the least-populated counties in America, is a somewhat like a beautiful national park minus tourists. The Park Range Ranch includes two operations: a working cattle ranch and a private guest ranch, called “Fort Boettcher,” for friends of the owner.

At the International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro, photographer Carol Highsmith, a Rockingham County native, documents one part of America for the Library of Congress.
