Timeline of the fight involving WSSU and VSU football players

• Nov. 15, 2013: WSSU quarterback Rudy Johnson is attacked in a restroom at the Anderson Center on WSSU’s campus by several Virginia State players, according to Rams football coach Connell Maynor. The melee, which occurred at the CIAA awards luncheon, attracts national news coverage.

One of the Virginia State players, backup running back Lamont Darnell Britt, 22, of Portsmouth, Va., was arrested by Winston-Salem police and charged with assault and inflicting serious injury. Johnson has a swollen eye and a laceration above his eye, court records show.

“We don’t know a lot of what happened,” WSSU Chancellor Donald Reaves said. “But we do know our starting quarterback, Rudy Johnson, was beaten up, and he didn’t beat himself up.”

The CIAA later cancels the conference championship game between WSSU and VSU scheduled for Nov. 16 in Bowman Gray Stadium.

• Nov. 16: The CIAA rules that VSU was ineligible to pay in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

• Nov. 18: Johnson and Reaves hold a news conference in which Johnson showed reporters his injuries and discussed how he was attacked. Reaves said that WSSU is preparing to file a formal complaint with the CIAA and the NCAA about the incident and to seek punishment against Virginia State.

Reaves said that VSU Head Football Coach Latrell Scott was uncooperative in the moments after the melee and was nearly arrested by WSSU campus police. “He (Scott) was more out of control than his players were,” Reaves said.

Earlier that day at a news conference in Ettrick, Va., Scott downplayed the possibility that additional Trojan football players could be charged, saying “there was a rush to judgment. I acknowledge that we had one young man who made a bad decision as young men sometimes do.”

• Nov. 19: CIAA Commissioner Jacqie Carpenter issues a statement, saying that conference officials were still gathering information about the incident at the CIAA awards luncheon. Carpenter requests written reports from coaches Scott and Maynor and from other administrators who were at the luncheon at the Anderson Center.

“After reviewing the submissions from the involved institutions with the information gathered, we will determine our next steps,” Carpenter said. “Our ultimate goal remains ensuring, to the extent possible, that this type of occurrence never happens again.”

VSU hires Robert Clayton, a Washington lawyer, to investigate the Nov. 15 incident.

• Nov. 21: State Reps. Ed Hanes and Evelyn Terry as well as state Sen. Earline Parmon release a statement in which they harshly criticizing the VSU’s football team and Scott their actions. They described the attack on Johnson as an act of thuggery.

“While we are not prepared to call the violence systemic in nature, Coach Scott’s behavior on Friday does not remove that potential from the realm of possibility,” the trio said. “To put it simply, the behavior of the multiple players and their coach was outrageous.”

• Nov. 23: Johnson has recovered from his injuries and plays in WSSU's victory against Slippery Rock in the first round of the Division II playoffs at Bowman Gray Stadium.

• Nov. 30: The Rams lose to Shepherd University in the second round of the playoffs.

• Dec. 5: Reaves releases a WSSU complaint filed with the NCAA and the CIAA. WSSU wants the NCAA and CIAA to impose sanctions against Virginia State University, including ordering VSU to pay WSSU for the money it lost when the CIAA football championship game was canceled and to place VSU on probation and strip scholarships from its football team.

• Dec. 9: A judge in Forsyth District Court continues Britt’s case until Jan. 15. On that day, another judge continues Britt’s case until April 15.

• Jan. 16, 2014: VSU suspends Britt for one semester for his role in the Nov. 15 incident.

• Feb. 3: Clayton concludes in his investigative report that Britt acted alone when he punched Johnson on Nov. 15 and that no VSU coach or administrator instructed Britt to attack Johnson to gain a competitive advantage for the Trojans in the scheduled CIAA championship game on Nov. 16.

• Feb. 5: Reaves issues a terse statement in which he ridicules VSU’s investigation and defends Johnson.

“I cannot understand how the investigator could uncover the facts of the incident when his interviews were limited to people who study or work at VSU,” Reaves said. “It comes as no surprise, therefore, that they all tell the same story.”
