Bipartisan giving
In the past few years, the bulk of Duke Energy’s campaign donations paid for Republican causes.
Duke Energy opens its wallet to Democrats, too.
In 2012, it loaned $10 million to the Democratic National Committee to help pay for its convention in Charlotte. That’s where the party nominated President Barack Obama for re-election.
So you’d think it would be difficult for either party to claim that the other is beholden to Duke Energy.
Not at all, actually.
Leaders of the state Democrat and Republican parties have wasted no time criticizing each other for accepting the company’s money.
Democrats are being “completely hypocritical” as they question those donations, said Daniel Keylin, a spokesman for the N.C. Republican Party.
“The Democratic National Committee is literally indebted to Duke Energy.”
He said Gov. Pat McCrory’s environmental policies aren’t swayed by Duke’s money because the governor puts constituents first.
Besides, Keylin said, Democrats are getting the company’s money, too — calling out U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan, former Gov. Bev Perdue and state Attorney General Roy Cooper, the presumed Democratic front-runner for governor.
“Their criticism has no factual basis,” Keylin said.
Marjorie Harris, a spokeswoman for the N.C. Democratic Party, did not return telephone calls requesting comment.

Who donates?
Duke Energy and its officials gave thousands to Gov. Pat McCrory and Republicans in the state House and Senate.
So did banks, insurance companies and other big businesses.
But “none put in as much as Duke,” said Bob Hall, executive director of Democracy North Carolina, a grass-roots group that wants campaign finance reform and increased transparency in politics.
“It highlights the special relationship McCrory has with Duke.”
The National Institute on Money in State Politics captures the minutiae in campaign finance reports — including where donors work.
That information helps provide a clearer picture of the influence Duke Energy has in state politics compared to other companies.
We looked at what other companies and their employees gave statewide candidates in 2012. It is by no means a comprehensive list, but it does show Duke’s level of involvement in state politics.
Soft money, silent money
It’s easy to track money that goes straight from a donor to a candidate.
But donors also can infuse candidates with cash indirectly — and more discreetly. They can give money to political action committees or interest groups, which then donate money to a candidate.
Indirect contributions let donors circumvent laws limiting how much money they can give directly to a candidate.
Corporations and big-money donors across America take advantage of this loophole.
Duke Energy is no different. Since 2008, the company has donated millions to pro-McCrory groups — the N.C. Republican Party, the Republican Governors Association, and the Republican State Leadership Committee.
What’s not known, however, is whether Duke Energy or its employees donated to groups like Renew North Carolina, a pro-McCrory committee that doesn’t have to disclose its donors.
“Duke and McCrory should release that information to the public now,” said Bob Hall of Democracy North Carolina.
