Rockingham awarded grant
Duke Energy awarded a $91,000 grant Wednesday to Rockingham County for an environmental park project, improved access to the Dan River and several other riverside improvements.
The utility announced the grant in a $1 million package of similar awards to waterfront communities that host Duke Energy plants. Duke started its annual Water Resources Fund program after the 2014 coal ash spill at the retired Dan River Steam Station near Eden.
"This grant enables us to better serve our community by creating a new public river access and environmental park on the Dan River in western Rockingham County," said County Manager Lance Metzler.
Metzler said county officials will partner with the nonprofit Dan River Basin Association and others on the project, which also includes improvements to forested areas near the river and educational programs for area youth.
