Drug users seek help in our communities

GREENSBORO  — Many drug users are seeking help in our communities.

Jennifer Harris is one of the hundreds of drug addicts being treated at the Greensboro location of Alcohol & Drug Services, a nonprofit that offers treatment, counseling and distributes methadone. The organization has offices in Greensboro and High Point along with Alamance, Rockingham and Randolph counties.

Anthony Steele, director of medical services for ADS, said the key is to get people addicted to opiates into structured programs.

“We often look at the idea of what we can do to help these people,” Steele said. “When you have someone incarcerated are they going to become productive citizens? No.

“When you give them a treatment program, they learn how to become a productive citizen.”

An ultimatum

Scoring heroin was easy and could be done just up the street from Harris’ front porch in the High Point neighborhood she calls “Dope Central.”

It was two years ago when she drove to a drug house with her then-3-year-old daughter to buy heroin. She didn’t see it as a drug house back then, she said. It was a house where a friend lived, who sold drugs.

Harris, 31, of High Point, said her boyfriend — the father of her 5-year-old daughter — was angry.

“My boyfriend told me if I didn’t get clean, he was going to take our daughter and leave,” Harris said. “At the time, I didn’t think of it as a drug house.”

Harris also has a 13-year-old son from a previous relationship.

A couple days later, her boyfriend gave her an ultimatum: Live with him and their daughter or take drugs.

Harris said she woke up at about 3 a.m., and in her dark bedroom told her boyfriend, “I want help.”

The perfect storm

The next day, Harris enrolled in a treatment program at ADS in High Point. She was one of the 90 people who showed up daily to receive counseling and Methadone – a narcotic pain reliever used together with medical supervision and counseling to treat opioid addiction.

In October 2012, shortly after she enrolled, that program was cut from the center after $220,000 in federal funding sliced from its budget. Steele said about 31 of the patients who were receiving outpatient treatment at the High Point office transferred over to the Greensboro location.

In July members of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners said they were reviewing whether to seek Medicaid reimbursement to help with the cost of drug rehab, which would limit stays to 14 days under Medicaid rules.

“We lost a specialized treatment facility here,” Steele said. “When you take a specialized treatment center out of the area, what do people have?”

The recent heroin epidemic in High Point is reason for a specialized treatment facility in the city, Steele said.

Through July 30, there have been 72 heroin overdoses this year in High Point with nine deaths. There were 30 total heroin overdoses and six deaths in 2012 and 2013 combined.

“About three or four years ago, we saw a change in trends,” Steele said. “We still had our heroin users, but we had an influx of pill users. Now we’re seeing that shift again.

“This has been the perfect storm that has been brewing.”
