Bic Irving Park McAlister

Lynn Hey/News & Record The A.W. McAlister house in Irving Park was designed in the 1920s by Charles Barton Keen of Philadelphia. McAlister was instrumental in establishing the insurance industry in Greensboro, founding Pilot Life Insurance Co.

Bic Fisher Park house

Some of Greensboro grandest homes are in Fisher Park. This neoclassical revival-style house on Fisher Park Circle was built in the teens for R.D. Douglas, vice president of Greensboro Bank and Trust Co.

The 1847 home of the Rev. Sidney D. Bumpass on Mendenhall Street is listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places and now is used as a bed and breakfast.

The late historian James G.W. MacLamroc stands next to the Genesis Monument in Fisher Park in 1972. The monument marks the approximate center of Guilford County. When Guilford County commissioners in the early 1800s decided to move the county seat, they wanted to locate it in the county’s exact center. Surveyors found the center to be too swampy. The courthouse and the new town to be built around it moved to the nearest high ground, a half-mile away. The swamp land was donated to the city by Capt. Basil J. Fisher in 1902, and Fisher Park became Greensboro’s first municipal park, and the neighborhood the city’s first planned suburb.

“Art Work of Greensboro, N.C.” Gravure Illustration Co., 1904 Brothers Moses and Ceasar Cone built a 200-loom factory they called Proximity Cotton Mill, for its location northeast of downtown Greensboro and closeness to cotton fields, and then convinced their partners, the Sternbergers, to move to Greensboro and build Revolution Mill.

“Art Work of Greensboro, N.C.” Gravure Illustration Co., 1904 Many stately homes lined Asheboro Street in the early 1900s. Development was slow and limited to Asheboro Street until the 1920s, when the Arlington Park subdivision was established, and later a trolley line ran down Asheboro.

News & Record This neoclassical revival house on North Mendenhall Street in Westerwood was built in 1908 for Harden Thomas Martin, a Rockingham County merchant who retired to the home. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now known as Double Oaks Inn, a bed and breakfast.

“Art Work of Greensboro, N.C.” Gravure Illustration Co., 1904 Lindley Park began as a recreation spot for many early Greensboro residents. People rode the electric street cars out to the amusement park and attended shows, dances and horse races and went swimming and skating on the lake.
