On how he first met his wife when she was a secretary at what was then Elon College: “I saw her standing on a chair in the Alamance Building, and I asked her, ‘Is there anything wrong?’ and she said, ‘I saw a mouse.’ Well, I was brave enough to save her, and I’ve been glad for 63 years.”

Elon highlights: Dean of Elon College, 1953-56; president of Elon College, 1957-1973; director of planned giving at Elon College, 1987-1992; president emeritus, since 1992; faculty member of Elon College (now Elon University) since 1946.

A message to graduating seniors, Elon commencement address of May 1964: “Science makes possible the tools which enable men to create or destroy; a system of values informed and enlightened by the Christian faith enables men to make the right decisions with regard to the use of these tools.”

A message to potential Elon donors: “No gift bears greater dividends than the education of young people.”

A message to his only granddaughter, Sara Danieley (now 16), when she was growing a corn stalk for her kindergarten class: “All good things come from the soil.”
