“All (coal ash) surface impoundments pose some risk of release – whether from a catastrophic failure or from a more limited structural failure, such as occurred at Duke Energy’s Dan River plant.
“EPA is therefore requiring all (coal ash) surface impoundments be inspected by a qualified person weekly for visual signs of a potentially adverse condition and monthly (with) instrumentation monitoring.”

Wildlife: Residents reported deaths of fish, turtles and more, but scientists could not link the deaths to coal ash.
Farming: Farmers returned to "business after researchers approved crop irrigation and livestock watering.
Recreation: Visitors declined last year along parts of the river affected by the spill.
