This sign, stapled to a tree at Abreu-Grogan Park in Danville, Va., advises citizens of a coal ash spill in the Dan River (background) that occurred about 20 miles upstream in February 2014. Photographed at the park on Wednesday, April 2, 2014.
- NELSON KEPLEY/News & Record

Sheila Michael holds up a container of water holding sample of coal ash that was spilled into the Dan River as she joined other supporters of the Dan River who gathered to rally against a coal ash spill on the Dan River at Island Ford Landing in Eden, NC on March 22, 2014. "I'm pretty disgusted by the whole thing, I think we all are going to have to pay for it, " Michael said. "It (the water sample) looks like sewage to me, it's sickening."

How bad is the spill?
Opinions range from a ticking time bomb of contaminated sludge on the river bottom that might cause who-knows-what kind of problems to a fast-moving river capable of cleansing itself.
What's in Coal Ash?
It contains several toxic elements in small quantities. But potential for human harm exists because of the large amount of coal ash that has accumulated during decades of electric-power production — 108 million tons (216 billion pounds) in Duke Energy’s 32 storage basins in North Carolina alone.
Here are those elements:
- Arsenic: Ingestion has been shown to cause skin cancer and cancer in the liver, bladder and lungs.
- Antimony: It’s associated with altered glucose and cholesterol levels, myocardial effects and spontaneous abortions. The EPA has set a limit of 145 parts per billion in lakes and streams to protect human health from the possible effects of consuming contaminated water and contaminated fish or shellfish.
- Barium: It can cause gastrointestinal disturbance and muscular weakness when people are exposed to it at levels above EPA drinking water standards for relatively short periods.
- Beryllium: It’s harmful if you breathe it. At levels high enough, a condition can result that resembles pneumonia and is known as acute beryllium disease.
- Cadmium and lead: Overexposure can trigger kidney disease, lung disease, fragile bones, decreased nervous system function, high blood pressure and anemia.
- Hexavalent chromium: It’s known to cause lung cancer when inhaled.
- Mercury: Exposure to high levels of metallic, inorganic or organic mercury can permanently damage the brain, kidneys and a developing fetus.
- Nickel: The most common harmful effect in humans is an allergic reaction. Up to 20 percent of the population is sensitive to exposure. The most frequent reaction is a skin rash at the site of contact. A less frequent reaction is an asthma attack.
- Selenium: It’s an essential nutrient that can cause health problems in excess, including selenosis involving hair loss, brittle nails and in extreme cases, loss of feeling or control in the arms or legs.
- Silver: Contact with high levels for a long period may cause a condition called argyria, a blue-gray discoloration of the skin and other body tissue.
- Thallium: Exposure is associated with hair loss, and nervous and reproductive system damage .

A long-term process
“I see it not like a catastrophic event but as a long-term process that involves continued mobilization of the coal ash,” - Avner Vengosh, Duke University scientist

This sign, stapled to a tree at Abreu-Grogan Park in Danville, Va., advises citizens of a coal ash spill in the Dan River (background) that occurred about 20 miles upstream in February 2014. Photographed at the park on Wednesday, April 2, 2014.
