Duke Energy unveiled plans for disposing of coal ash from the retired Dan River Steam Station on Tuesday. A transfer station and a railroad extension are under construction to move some of the coal ash to a site in Virginia. The remaining ash will be stored on site once a lined landfill is constructed.

Duke Energy unveiled its plans for disposing of coal ash from the retired Dan River Steam Station on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015, in Eden, N.C. EDEN — Duke Energy showed off a new rail yard and loading dock Tuesday at the retired Dan River Steam Station, saying the nearly complete additions should swing into action within several weeks to safely dispose of about 1.3 million tons of coal ash.
