HUMAN RIGHTS MEDAL

N.C. A&T on Friday presented its 2019 Human Rights Medal to Zaki Khalifa, long-time owner of Zaki Oriental Rugs in High Point.

Khalifa started his handmade rug business after immigrating to the United States from Pakistan in 1976. He announced last year that he would give his business to a Pakistani charity that builds orphanages and educates underprivileged children. The charity plans to sell the South Main Street showroom and its inventory.

Khalifa has done other charitable work throughout the years. Those efforts include supporting a free health care clinic in Burlington and donating former business locations to High Point civic groups.

A&T presents the medal — one of its highest honors — annually to people who have fought for social justice and tried to improve the world.

Last year's winner was Bob Page, an LBGT advocate and CEO of Replacements Ltd, the McLeansville retailer of china, crystal and silverware. Previous winners include former Guilford County School Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green, U.S. Reps. John Lewis and Eva Clayton and local activists the Rev. Nelson Johnson and Joyce Johnson.
