UNCG professor Steve Kroll-Smith has co-written a book about the Hollygrove and Pontchartrain Park neighborhoods’ recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

“The people who did agree to talk to us wanted to talk. We’d often just ask one question and they were off,” UNCG professor Steve Kroll-Smith said of the New Orleans residents he and his colleagues interviewed for their book on Hurricane Katrina.

GREENSBORO — Ten years ago today, Hurricane Katrina swamped New Orleans. The Category 3 storm caused more than $100 billion worth of damage along the Gulf Coast, left 80 percent of the city under water and is blamed for the deaths of about 1,800 people in the region.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Steve Kroll-Smith is a professor of sociology at UNCG. Before he came to UNCG, he worked as a research professor of sociology at the University of New Orleans. His research interests include disasters, health and environmental hazards.

Kroll-Smith has written and edited seven books, including one about the effects of a long-burning mine fire on the town of Centralia, Pa.

His next book is a comparison of the disaster response in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and in San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire. The University of Texas Press is scheduled to publish the book in early 2017.

ABOUT THE BOOK

“Left to Chance: Hurricane Katrina and the Story of Two New Orleans Neighborhoods” was written by Steve Kroll-Smith, a professor of sociology at UNCG, and two former colleagues from the University of New Orleans, sociology professors Vern Baxter and Pam Jenkins.

The idea for the book came in a phone call to Kroll-Smith from a retired Yale University professor about a week after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. A $150,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation covered research and travel expenses.

For six years, the authors interviewed residents of two African American neighborhoods: Pontchartrain Park, a middle-class suburban-style enclave anchored by Southern University at New Orleans; and Hollygrove, a blue-collar neighborhood west of downtown and the French Quarter. The book documents their experiences rebuilding their homes and their lives after the flood.

The 210-page book is available from the University of Texas Press. It's one of five books in the publisher’s Katrina Bookshelf series.

The New York Times Sunday Book Review said this about the book: “... eventually Kroll-Smith, Baxter and Jenkins found themselves at a loss. So many aspects of the Katrina ordeal — where outside New Orleans one happened to have family and friends; which FEMA official answered the phone; whether a particular local bureaucrat was better swayed by a calm request or an emotional outburst — seemed, as their title puts it, left to chance.”
