WHY DO THEY COST SO MUCH?
Why are textbooks so expensive? There are lots of reasons.
The average price of a new textbook is $88, according to the National Association of College Stores, the national trade association for campus bookstores. But the NACS admits that its average includes such things as relatively cheap novels for English literature classes and biographies for history classes.
Traditional textbooks can cost a couple of hundred dollars apiece. Because they're hard-bound and hundreds of pages long, they're costly to produce, ship and store. Publisher and bookstore profits also add to the cost.
A 2014 report from the U.S. Public Interest Research Group put the blame for high prices squarely on textbook publishers. Five companies control 80 percent of a nearly $9 billion market, which gives them a great deal of control over prices.
Publishers put out new editions of textbooks every few years — and each new edition is on average 12 percent more expensive than the last. Publishers also bundle books with CD-ROMs or pass codes that give students one-time access to online quizzes and other class materials. These extras add to the expense.
The high and rising cost of textbooks might be harming the academic progress of students. According to the U.S. PIRG report, nearly two-thirds of college students said they passed on buying a textbook because of cost. Half said the high cost of books affected how many — and which — courses they took.
A survey of Florida college students published this summer found similar results. One in five students surveyed said they failed a course because they couldn't afford the textbook. Two-thirds of students said they had passed on buying a required book because of the cost.
