Think the class of 2009 had it tough?

Things aren’t much better for recent college graduates.

Accenture, the management consulting firm, last month released the 2014 edition of its annual survey of college graduates. The survey compares the attitudes of 2,000 people who graduated from college last month to those who got their degrees in 2012 and 2013.

The survey found:

• 43 percent of the class of 2014 expects to get paid more than $40,000 at their first job. However, only 21 percent of 2012 and 2013 graduates have jobs that pay that much. A quarter of them are making less than $19,000.

• Only 11 percent of the class of 2014 had a job before they graduate. That’s down 5 percent from last year’s crop of college grads.

• 68 percent of this year’s graduates left school with student loan debt compared to 64 percent of 2012 and 2013 grads. Among new graduates, 28 percent have more than $30,000 in student loan debt.

• 46 percent of 2012 and 2013 graduates say they’re underemployed, meaning that they have a job that doesn’t require a college degree. That’s up 5 percentage points from last year’s survey.

• 38 percent of this year’s graduates plan to move back home. That compares to 42 percent of 2012 and 2013 graduates who are currently living with their parents.

• 13 percent of 2012 and 2013 grads have been unemployed since they graduated. Four in 10 think they would have had more success finding a job had they picked a different major. Seven in 10 expect to return to school within five years.
