Playing The Percentages
New state House and Senate districts proposed for Guilford County are highly polarized along political lines. Here's a look at voting patterns in the North Carolina General Assembly’s newest versions of the N.C. House of Representatives’ and Senate districts that are wholly contained in Guilford County.
The percentages are an average for each proposed district’s partisan vote in seven, statewide races from 2010 through November 2016.* The list shows current officeholders in each district:
Senate
District 27 — Sen. Trudy Wade (R-Greensboro): 57 percent Republican, 41 percent Democrat.
District 28** — Sen. Gladys Robinson (D-Greensboro): 77 percent Democrat, 21 percent Republican.
House
District 57** — Rep. Pricey Harrison (D-Greensboro): 84 percent Democrat, 14 percent Republican.
District 58** — Rep. Amos Quick (D-Greensboro): 71 percent Democrat, 27 percent Republican.
District 59*** — Rep. Jon Hardister (R-Greensboro): 56 percent Republican, 42 percent Democrat.
District 60** — Rep. Cecil Brockman (D-High Point): 64 percent Democrat, 33 percent Republican.
District 61 — Rep. John Faircloth (R-High Point): 56 percent Republican, 42 percent Democrat.
District 62 — Rep. John Blust (R-Greensboro): 55 percent Republican, 42 percent Democrat.
* Includes average partisan voting percentages in each proposed district in U.S. Senate contests 2010, 2014 and 2016; presidential elections 2012 and 2016; and gubernatorial races 2012 and 2016.
** This is one of the seats that triggered the redistricting after federal courts found its current version to be an unconstitutional, racial gerrymander.
*** Hardister holds office in current House District 59, but the new version has no incumbent living within its bounds. Hardister plans to move there and run for office again.

By the numbers
This chart compares white-black voter ratios in Guilford County’s current N.C. House districts with those in the plan recently approved by the General Assembly. Data on Senate seats was not available. Legislators acted last week under court order to fix unconstitutional racial gerrymandering, and the proposed changes must be approved by a panel of federal judges before taking effect.
Percentages are for voting-age residents of each current and proposed district:
District 57* — Rep. Pricey Harrison (D-Greensboro):
Current: 41 percent white, 51 percent black
Proposed: 32 percent white, 61 percent black
District 58* — Rep. Amos Quick (D-Greensboro):
Current: 51 percent white, 42 percent black
Proposed: 45 percent white, 42 percent black
District 59 — Rep. Jon Hardister (R-Greensboro):
Current: 83 percent white, 14 percent black
Proposed: 73 percent white, 22 percent black
District 60* — Rep. Cecil Brockman (D-High Point):
Current: 36 percent white, 51 percent black
Proposed: 49 percent white, 40 percent black
District 61 — state Rep. John Faircloth (R-High Point):
Current: 76 percent white, 15 percent black
Proposed: 81 percent white, 13 percent black
District 62 — Rep. John Blust (R-Greensboro):
Current: 80 percent white, 13 percent black
Proposed: 81 percent white, 14 percent black
*This is one of the seats that triggered the redistricting after federal courts found its current version to be an unconstitutional, racial gerrymander.
