Correction
A Sunday story about tensions between police and the black community in Greensboro incorrectly described TV footage of a June 2013 incident that led to a downtown curfew for teenagers.
Though local TV stations described fighting over video of young people running downtown, their footage did not actually depict the fights police said they broke up on that evening.
FATAL ENCOUNTERS WITH POLICE
New York City
Eric Garner, 43, a black man, died after being put in an apparent chokehold by a white police officer on July 17, 2014. Garner had been stopped on suspicion of selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. The heavyset Garner, who had asthma, was heard repeatedly gasping, “I can’t breathe!” He later died at a hospital. The medical examiner ruled Garner’s death a homicide and found that a chokehold contributed to it. A New York City grand jury cleared Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death. Garner had a criminal history with dozens of arrests on charges that included selling unlicensed cigarettes.
Ferguson, Mo.
Michael Brown, 18, who was black, was shot and killed Aug. 9, 2014, by Darren Wilson, a white police officer, after some sort of confrontation occurred when Wilson spotted Brown and a friend and told them to stop walking in the middle of a street. A St. Louis County grand jury declined to bring criminal charges against the officer. Brown’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit last month against the city, Wilson and former Police Chief Thomas Jackson, who resigned in March. Brown had no adult criminal record, authorities said. Juvenile records are sealed in Missouri, but a court official said Brown had never been found delinquent of the juvenile equivalents of the state’s most serious felonies, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
North Charleston, S.C.
Walter Lamer Scott, 50, a black man, was shot and killed April 4 after a traffic stop. A bystander’s video of what happened shows Patrolman Michael Thomas Slager, who is white, apparently firing eight shots at the back of Scott as he ran away. Slager said that Scott was trying to grab his stun gun and that he felt threatened. He was charged with murder on April 7. If convicted, he could face 30 years to life in prison. Family and friends say Scott likely ran because he owed child support and in South Carolina, that leads to jail time. He had previously served time in jail for failing to pay child support.
Baltimore
Freddie Gray, 25, was arrested April 12 after a brief foot chase. Baltimore police said they found an illegal switchblade on him. Prosecutors allege that at some time during his transport in a police van, Gray received a spinal injury because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, which violated protocol. He died of his injuries April 19. Prosecutors also say the blade found on Gray was not illegal. Six Baltimore officers have been charged in connection with his death. Gray had a long history of arrests, mostly on drug charges, with some charges still pending at the time of his death.
