Juana Luz Tobar Ortega hangs out with her granddaughters at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Greensboro in April. Tobar Ortega, who was born in Mexico but now claims Asheboro home, was the first person to ask a North Carolina church for sanctuary from U.S. immigration officials.

Juana Ortega at St. Barnabas (copy)

In this April photo, Juana Ortega hangs out with her granddaughters at St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church, where she has sought sanctuary from deportation since last year.

On Oct. 2, 2017, a federal judge vacated the deportation order against Minerva Cisneros Garcia. Here she wipes a tear as the Rev. Julie Peeples explains how she learned the news from her lawyer that morning. Cisneros Garcia had sought sanctuary at Peeple's church, Congregational United Church of Christ, since June that year to avoid deportation.

On June 29, 2017, Minerva Cisneros Garcia entered sanctuary at Congregational United Church of Christ to avoid deportation. A federal judge later vacated that order and Cisneros Garcia left the church. She is continuing to work on getting her citizenship.
