The South Benbow Road Historic District was home to such prominent leaders as Henry Frye, the first Black person appointed to the North Carolina Supreme Court, surgeon and civil rights activist Dr. Alvin V. Blount, civil rights attorney J. Kenneth Lee, and William Streat and W. Edward Jenkins, two architects who designed many of the houses in the district and were known for their modernist style.

B. Bernetiae Reed and Eric Woodard are among the group responsible for submitting the application for the South Benbow Road Historic District. The two are shown Dec. 4 at the J. Kenneth Lee House, a noted example of modernist architect within the district. Lee was a prominent civil rights attorney in Greensboro.

The South Benbow Road Historic District was home to such prominent leaders as Henry Frye, the first Black person appointed to the North Carolina Supreme Court, surgeon and civil rights activist Dr. Alvin V. Blount, civil rights attorney J. Kenneth Lee, and William Streat and W. Edward Jenkins, two architects who designed many of the houses in the district and were known for their modernist style.
