'Still at square one': A Winston-Salem family desperately searches for their missing father

Search for Missing Man Kim Whitehurst

Sam Whitehurst (left), 29, and his brother-in-law, Alec Shellberg, search for his father, Kim Tyler Whitehurst, 69, on a 40-acre property along Valley Road on Wednesday. Whitehurst, who suffers from cognitive impairments, was last seen on video leaving 2945 Reynolda Road on Jan. 5 at approximately 2:45 a.m.

Mike Burleson of Mocksville secures his four-wheeler to his trailer after helping search for Whitehurst along Valley Road. Burleson said he saw the family needed help and four-wheelers. “I had time and I had a four-wheeler,” Burleson said.

Ryan Nichols searches the wooded property for Whitehurst. Nichols’ mother is an acquaintance of Whitehurst’s and Nichols didn’t work this week so he decided to help.

An N.C. Highway Patrol helicopter flies over the area of Bethabara Park. In addition to the helicopter, Winston-Salem Police were flying thermal drones and trained dogs were searching the area.

Search for Missing Man Kim Whitehurst

Mike Burleson of Mocksville secures his four-wheeler to his trailer after helping search for Whitehurst along Valley Road. Burleson said he saw the family needed help and four-wheelers. “I had time and I had a four-wheeler,” Burleson said.

Ryan Nichols searches the wooded property for Whitehurst. Nichols’ mother is an acquaintance of Whitehurst’s and Nichols didn’t work this week so he decided to help.
