Abigail Seo Abigail Seo graduated from Western Guilford High School on June 4 and will attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall. During her time growing up in Greensboro, she became a championship skater who earned a dozen medals, including one gold. Ice skating, she says, helped her cope with stresses of being a top student.

Keyri Romero Fuentes graduated June 4 from Northeast Guilford High School and will enroll in UNCG in the fall where she plans to major in nursing. When she graduates, she'll span the crowd for her aunt. Her aunt helped bring her from El Salvador to Greensboro when she was 8 and paid $20,000 over four years in legal costs to help her receive her permanent green card.

William Locklear, 22, has been a student with Guilford County Schools since he was 15 months old. He joined the infant toddler program at Gateway Education Center to help him learn how to adapt after a traumatic brain injury left him unable to walk, talk or feed himself. On June 1, William graduated from Haynes-Inman Education Center and received his diploma.

Joey McGinnis IV graduated May 26 from the STEM Early College at N.C. A&T and will enter Carnegie Mellon University on a full athletic scholarship. The quarterback from Southwest Guilford High, his home school, will play football and major in engineering at Carnegie Mellon. That achievement marries his dream of going to a great school, majoring in engineering, and playing the game he loves. On how football helped develop him, Joey says: “When I was younger and something wouldn’t go right, I would lash out and pout over whatever the case may be. But through good coaches, I was able to develop into the leader I am today. You learn how to remain calm with whatever you’re faced with.”

Jake Rouse graduated May 26 from GTCC Middle College Jamestown with both a high school diploma and an associate degree. This fall, he will enroll at UNC-Wilmington and major in computer science and minor in creative writing. He wants to be a video game designer. Says Jake: “I think God has a lot of big plans for me. Joya Gray graduated June 3 from Penn-Griffin School for the Arts and will head to GTCC to finish her associate degree in art. She’ll then pursue a second associate degree in surgical technology before transferring to UNC-Greensboro or Winston-Salem State. Her graduation will be emotional. She’s been a student at Penn-Griffin for seven years. But it’s bigger than that. The history of Penn-Griffin is the history of her family, and nd she’ll be the last generation of her family to walk the halls. At least for now. Says Joya: "To know that I’m the last generation as of right now to attend Penn-Griffin, I still will always be respectful of my family’s lineage. I will continue on.”

Abigail Seo

Abigail Seo Abigail Seo graduated from Western Guilford High School on June 4 and will attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall. During her time growing up in Greensboro, she became a championship skater who earned a dozen medals, including one gold. Ice skating, she says, helped her cope with stresses of being a top student.

Says Abigail Seo: "Since I could lean into ice skating, I didn't have to worry about a test coming up or homework coming up. That was my safe space."

Keyri Romero Fuentes graduated June 4 from Northeast Guilford High School and will enroll in UNCG in the fall where she plans to major in nursing. When she graduates, she'll span the crowd for her aunt. Her aunt helped bring her from El Salvador to Greensboro when she was 8 and paid $20,000 over four years in legal costs to help her receive her permanent green card.

William Locklear, 22, has been a student with Guilford County Schools since he was 15 months old. He joined the infant toddler program at Gateway Education Center to help him learn how to adapt after a traumatic brain injury left him unable to walk, talk or feed himself. On June 1, William graduated from Haynes-Inman Education Center and received his diploma.

Joey McGinnis IV graduated May 26 from the STEM Early College at N.C. A&T and will enter Carnegie Mellon University on a full athletic scholarship. The quarterback from Southwest Guilford High, his home school, will play football and major in engineering at Carnegie Mellon. That achievement marries his dream of going to a great school, majoring in engineering, and playing the game he loves. On how football helped develop him, Joey says: “When I was younger and something wouldn’t go right, I would lash out and pout over whatever the case may be. But through good coaches, I was able to develop into the leader I am today. You learn how to remain calm with whatever you’re faced with.”

Jake Rouse graduated May 26 from GTCC Middle College Jamestown with both a high school diploma and an associate degree. This fall, he will enroll at UNC-Wilmington and major in computer science and minor in creative writing. He wants to be a video game designer. Says Jake: “I think God has a lot of big plans for me. I want to be what I looked up to as a child. I want to create these games that I looked up to. And finally, I’ve made that dream a reality.”

Joya Gray graduated June 3 from Penn-Griffin School for the Arts and will head to GTCC to finish her associate degree in art. She’ll then pursue a second associate degree in surgical technology before transferring to UNC-Greensboro or Winston-Salem State. Her graduation will be emotional. She’s been a student at Penn-Griffin for seven years. But it’s bigger than that. The history of Penn-Griffin is the history of her family, and nd she’ll be the last generation of her family to walk the halls. At least for now. Says Joya: "To know that I’m the last generation as of right now to attend Penn-Griffin, I still will always be respectful of my family’s lineage. I will continue on.”
