Chandler (copy)

Executive Director Marilyn Chandler is leaving the Greensboro Jewish Federation after 36 years and a lengthy list of accomplishments. “It’s never been just a job.”

Chandler points out the long and distinguished list of board presidents she has worked with over her 36 years leading the Greensboro Jewish Federation. “I knew that this was where I wanted to be.”

On a recent day, Chandler talks about food donations for Jewish families. A social worker by trade, she once thought about becoming a rabbi. At that time, though, women were not ordained.

Cigar boxes in Chandler’s office harken back to her earliest days on the job and trying to convince people to donate money.

Chandler first stepped foot on Israel’s soil in 1973 — almost 50 years to the day of the recent Hamas attack — as a birthday present from her grandparents. That trip would influence the rest of her life.
