Coal ash issue took years to reach breaking point

On Wednesday, workers with Phillips and Jordan, Inc., a Duke Energy contractor, set up and test a water treatment process which will be used to remove coal ash from material collected in a waste solids clarifier at the Danville Water Treatment Plant on Park Avenue in Danville, Va. Barry Dunkley, director of water and wastewater treatment at the plant, said the belt filter press (left) will be used to obtain a firm cake of the solid material containing coal ash which currently resides in the plant's waste solids clarifier. The tanker (right) is used to collect water off the belt press for disposal into the sanitary sewer after the coal ash is removed from it. Dunkley said a similar process will be used after solids are vacuumed out of the Dan River near the Schoolfield Dam. Abreu-Grogan Park on Memorial Drive in Danville is expected to close for part of the spring and summer while the process takes place.

Say the words “coal ash” to most North Carolina residents and until recently, you probably would get a blank stare.

This sign, stapled to a tree at Abreu-Grogan Park in Danville, Va., advises citizens of a Feb. 2 coal ash spill about 20 miles upstream in the Dan River (background).
