By the numbers

1,750: Estimated number of full-time residents of downtown Greensboro.

25-34: The fastest-growing age group downtown, from a study in 2009.

1,500: The number of housing units in downtown Greensboro.

Downtown's evolution

1998: The N Club, now known as Allure Nightlife, opens on South Elm Street, giving downtown night life a jump-start.

2002: M’Coul’s Public House opens on West McGee Street.

2002: Triad Stage opens a 300-seat regional theater on South Elm Street. The site, once the Montgomery Ward building, was vacant for nearly 40 years before becoming what is now the Pyrle Theater.

2004: Natty Greene’s Pub & Brewing Co., named for Greensboro’s namesake Gen. Nathanael Greene, opens on South Elm Street.

2006: Center City Park, a 1.9-acre green space, opens on North Elm Street. It’s a private park maintained with funding from the city of Greensboro.

2007: CityView at Southside opens, offering studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments in its first phase of 275 units.

2009: The Mellow Mushroom, a popular chain pizza restaurant and bar, opens at the far end of South Elm Street.

2009: Center Pointe, a $40 million luxury condominium development, opens.

2011: The Interactive Resource Center, a day center for the homeless, opens on East Washington Street with grants from Guilford County and the city of Greensboro.

2012: Greenway at Fisher Park opens, offering 196 apartments in its first phase. A new phase with 70 more units is scheduled to open next year.

2013: Deep Roots Market opens at 600 N. Eugene St., moving from Spring Garden Street. It is downtown’s only grocery store.
