P.J. HAIRSTON'S TROUBLES

May 13: Charged with speeding while driving a 2012 rented Chevrolet Camaro, which had been paid for by Catinia Farrington. She shares an address with Haydn Thomas, a Durham resident, felon and party promoter.

June 4: Hairston and two passengers – Carlos Sanford and Miykael Faulcon, a basketball player at Elizabeth City State – are charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession in Durham. Hairston, also charged with driving without a license, was driving a rented 2013 GMC Yukon, paid for by Thomas. A handgun is found near the checkpoint, where the Yukon stopped before proceeding to the checkpoint, but police don't identify the owner of the gun and it's not associated with Hairston or anyone else in the car. Hairston’s charges are later dropped.

July 28: A Highway Patrol officer clocks Hairston driving 93 mph in a 65 mph zone near Salisbury. Hairston was driving a friend’s car. Hairston is charged with speeding and reckless driving. Hours later, UNC coach Roy Williams suspends Hairston indefinitely.

Sept. 27: UNC begins preseason practice. Hairston is allowed to participate in practice, but not in games.

Nov. 8: UNC begins the season with an 84-61 victory against Oakland. Hairston and Leslie McDonald, a senior guard, sit out.

Dec. 18: The NCAA clears McDonald to return after missing nine games. Because he received impermissible benefits, he is ordered to repay $1,783 to a charity of his choice before the end of the regular season.

Dec. 20: UNC says Hairston won't return to the team.

AMONG HAIRSTON'S OPTIONS

Former Dudley basketball star P.J. Hairston will have options. Among them:

The NBA

Basketball teams are always looking for 6-foot-6, 220-pound shooters. But Hairston cannot sign with an NBA team this season and must wait until the June draft, according to the National Basketball Players Association eligibility rules. "No player may sign a contract or play in the NBA unless he has been eligible for selection in at least one NBA draft," the rule book reads. Hairston could sign with a team in the NBA Development League, which runs from November through April, although no NBA team could sign him. Former UNC star Kendall Marshall recently earned a spot on the Lakers roster by excelling in the Development League. But Marshall was in the last NBA draft. Hairston was not.

Domestic or foreign

Hairston could play in a lesser professional league in the country, or a semipro league such as the American Basketball Association. He could also go overseas, as Dudley alumnus Will Graves did after he was dismissed by North Carolina for violating team rules before the 2010-11 season.

Other options

Hairston doesn’t have to play basketball. He could continue to take classes and declare for the NBA draft in June, though that likely wouldn’t be his best option to improve his draft stock. Hairston is projected as the 28th pick in DraftExpress.com’s latest 2014 NBA mock draft. If Coach Roy Williams’ assertion that Hairston is dominating his practices is true, Hairston’s value could go up if that translates to the court, assuming Hairston finds one. Hairston was projected as a late first-round draft pick had he declared himself eligible in June.
