Controversy, concern continue to create rift over Rich Fork land

Tour of Rich Fork Preserve in High Point

A wooden bridge crosses a creek in the Rich Fork Preserve. Mountain bikers have built a bridge and boardwalk more than 60 feet long for a bike course. Preservation advocates say the land shouldn’t be used for “active recreation” activities, including mountain biking.

At least 100 people attended a Jan. 13 meeting in High Point about the future of the 116-acre Rich Fork Preserve, which the county bought in 2012 under its open-space program. The possibility of mountain biking trails in the preserve brought the wrath of conservationists.

Robert McNiece, director of facility property management and parks for Guilford County, makes the presentation as more than 100 people attended the Guilford County Rich Fork Preserve public meeting, at the High Point Public Library, on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, in High Point, N.C.

The Rich Fork Preserve Committee, now known as the Friends of Rich Fork Preserve/Hedgecock Farm, was formed for the purpose of preserving the Hedgecock farmstead on the nature preserve in High Point.

Marty Spottl (left) and Marie Poteat chat by a creek bed inside the Rich Fork Preserve on Friday. Poteat, a former member of the open-space committee, says powerful special interests are at play concerning use of the preserve.

The Hedgecock section of the Rich Fork Preserve has a building used to store hay. Use of the preserve has been steeped in controversy, mainly over whether the property should have mountain bike trails.
