John Fisher points to power lines on Seminole Drive in Greensboro as he explains how the electromagnetic waves in the neighborhood work. Fisher says the radiation permeating his neighborhood has caused him and his wife, Ann Borden, to develop health problems.

A wire snakes up a power line on Seminole Drive, Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, in Greensboro, N.C.

Duke officials say their own readings show a higher level of radiation present, but that it’s within safe limits.

Ann Fisher points to her mother’s house on the other side of the block where she stays when the electromagnetic waves disrupt her sleep, Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, in Greensboro, N.C.

Borden says she sensed that something wasn’t right in 1990, when she moved here from Winston-Salem. “Occasionally, my ears would start to ring,” she says. “It would occur at certain times of the year, and then it would go away.”
