Constandina “Dena” Kontoulas, a native of Greece who made pastries for the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church’s annual Greek Festival, died Jan. 3. She was 90. Kontoulas, who became known as the “pastry lady,” also helped run the Senate Cafe in the ’60s and early ’70s in downtown Greensboro with her husband, Cleo Kontoulas, and later joined Cleo’s brother to open Alpat Restaurant, which closed in 2006. In this 2006 photo, Dena Kontoulas, (left) Bill Oncea, and the Rev. Dionysios Listermann-Vierling work at preserving Greek heritage in the kitchen area at the Greek Orthodox Church as they prepare food for the church's longtime annual festival.
