NAMING CONTROVERSIES
Three other N.C. universities have had similar debates over the names of campus buildings:
UNC-Chapel Hill: After a year of student protests, trustees in May renamed Saunders Hall. The academic building was named for William Saunders, a a UNC-CH graduate and trustee, a former N.C. Secretary of State — and a 19th century Ku Klux Klan leader. The building, now named Carolina Hall, will carry a historical marker about Saunders. The UNC-CH board also put a 16-year freeze on any more building name changes.
East Carolina University: Trustees voted last February to rename Aycock Hall and establish Heritage Hall, a permanent place to recognize Aycock and other people of importance to the university. The name came off the building in December; trustees are expected to vote today to name the dorm “Legacy Hall.” Heritage Hall will go in a new student services building, which is scheduled to open in uptown Greenville in 2018.
Duke University: Trustees in 2014 renamed Aycock Residence Hall after an outcry from students. In January, Duke announced that the dorm, now named East Residence Hall, would be torn down to make room for a new residence hall on East Campus.
Elsewhere: Trustees at Clemson University have rebuffed requests to rename its iconic main building; Tillman Hall was named for Benjamin Tillman, who as South Carolina governor pushed for a constitutional convention that stripped most black residents of their voting rights. ... Yale University has debated for years the name of Calhoun College, named for former Vice President (and Yale grad) John C. Calhoun; the South Carolina native was a slaveowner and fierce defender of slavery during his time in the U.S. Senate. ... Georgetown University in November renamed two buildings named for former Georgetown presidents who sold Jesuit-owned slaves in the 1830s to pay off campus debt.
THE VOTES
There were two votes Thursday on the Aycock Auditorium un-naming.
In the morning, the Board of Trustees' Aycock subcommittee voted 9-2 to recommend to the full board to remove the Aycock name. That committee consisted of five trustees and faculty, student, staff and community representatives. The two no votes came from trustees Brad Hayes, chairman of the subcommittee and vice chairman of the full board; and Frances Bullock.
Thursday afternoon, the board voted unanimously to rename the auditorium. Hayes and Bullock said they voted as trustees to rename the building to show their support for the committee's majority recommendation.
