Megan Ritsche, a second grade teacher, works with Sofia Morales (center) and Mariam Ramth on reading at Allen Jay Elementary School on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, in High Point, N.C. Allen Jay is identified as a low-performing school based on standardized test performance. There are many factors that go into a school’s performance that aren’t taken into account, such as, at Allen Jay about 40 percent of students don’t speak English as their first language. Despite this, the students typically improve their performances on tests year to year.

KEY FINDINGS

• 42 Guilford County schools labeled low performing.

• 28 of those schools met goals for annual academic growth, or how much students learn in a year.

• All of them are Title I schools, meaning they get federal funds to offset the effects of poverty.

• Five schools received a D or F but were not labeled low performing because they either exceeded annual growth goal or, in one case, do not have a growth score.
