Methodology
The News & Record spent about two weeks combing through Federal Election Commission records to determine how much of individual contributions came from people with leadership roles in businesses and corporations.
We looked at a sample that included 25 states and the District of Columbia, searching for keywords such as chairman, president, CEO and looking for indications that a person filled one of several other leadership roles in a money making venture.
The N&R scan does not represent a definitive accounting. It involved exploring the roughly 11,000 campaign-finance documents for 2017-18 through June 30 that are on file for both candidates at the Federal Election Commission, seeking states where either candidate had contributions of $250 or more from what appeared to be a corporate source.
