Local water officials became worried after the contaminant PFOS was found at relatively high levels in drinking water produced by the city’s Mitchell Water Treatment Plant, which draws its supply from Lake Brandt in northwestern Greensboro.

PFOS belongs to the “perfluorinated” family of chemicals that has been used in a wide variety of products over the years:

PFOS limits are often set in combination with its sister chemical, PFOA (perfluoroctanoic acid) that has been a major component of Teflon cooking surfaces and many other consumer products. EPA’s 70 ppt health advisory for drinking water applies to both compounds either alone or in combination.

PFOS All Over

PFOS was detected in blood serum in up to 99 percent of the U.S. general population between 1999 and 2012; however, the levels of PFOS in blood have been decreasing since U.S. companies began to phase out production.

Water sources contaminated by PFOS have been associated with releases from manufacturing sites, industrial sites, fire/crash training areas, and industrial or municipal waste sites where products are disposed of or applied.

Half Time

A long half-life was among the factors EPA considered in lowering its PFOS health advisory by 65 percent in May 2016. Studies predict a half life of 5.4 years inside the human body, the agency said.

Meaning? Half the PFOS in your morning coffee could still be with you in August 2023, a quarter in January 2029, an eighth in the spring of 2034.
