Greensboro council 7-2 vote gives reprieve to Cascade Saloon

GREENSBORO — The Cascade Saloon will get a second life.
The city council voted 7-2 Monday to give the crumbling, 120-year-old building at 408-410 S. Elm St. to Preservation Greensboro. The city will also provide $175,000 to help restore it.
The move comes after the city took the historic property in an eminent domain lawsuit in April.
Faced with the estimated $180,000 cost of demolishing the building or more than $800,000 to restore it, council members said the Preservation Greensboro option looked good.
“Right now we have a historic building in downtown Greensboro that is essentially worth zero,” Councilwoman Nancy Hoffmann said. “It is just an eyesore.”
After restoration and a return to the tax rolls, the building could bring in over $200,000 in property taxes over the next 30 years, Hoffmann said.
Representatives from Preservation Greensboro said they’re in discussions with partners to help restore the building, possibly for a future business.
Not everyone thought that was the best option. Council members Sharon Hightower and Jamal Fox voted against transferring the property to Preservation Greensboro. Both said the plans for the building lacked detail.
“We’re moving too fast here,” Fox said. “We’re rushing this thing.”
The council will get information on Preservation Greensboro’s private sector partners and their plans for the building before releasing the $175,000.
