Rolfe Retire

The dredge "Northerly Island" sits in a breach in the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, Oct. 28, 1990. The dredge, which was employed in maintaining a navigable channel through Oregon Inlet, broke loose of its anchorage in a storm and slammed into the bridge. The Journal chartered a small plane to fly to the coast for this photograph, then fly back with the film for the next day's front page.

Bonner Bridge Collapse

People boarding the free ferry from Cape Hatteras to Ocracoke, October 27, 1990. The state-run ferry was the only way off the island after the collapse of the Bonner Bridge, other than by air or boat. A 2-hour ferry was available from Ocracoke to the mainland, requiring reservations. (Winston-Salem Journal/David Rolfe)

The dredge Northerly Island can be seen lodged in the bed of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, Saturday, October 27, 1990. The dredge broke loose in a storm late Thursday night and smashed into the 2.7- mile-long bridge, severing electrical, telephone, and water lines serving the lower banks, and closing the island's only land connection to the mainland. Bonner Bridge Collapse

Visitors to Cape Hatteras were marooned on the island after the dredge "Northerly Island " broke adrift in a storm and crashed into the Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet, bringing down the only road linking most of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore with the mainland. With the loss of the bridge, the only way off Hatteras was the free ferry to Ocracoke, then the 2-hour ferry to the mainland, a process that could easily take a day or more. Outer Banks (copy)

Traffic head south on N.C. 12 onto Pea Island from the Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet on Nov. 7, 2017. Frequent overwash from the Atlantic Ocean, at the left of the photo, is a continual threat to the besieged highway, which is the sole lifeline for the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Outer Banks villages and Ocracoke Island. Plans are underway to build a low bridge on the sound side of this stretch to connect directly to the town of Rodanthe.

Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station

The old Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station, seen abandoned in 1995, was built in 1898 and abandoned in 1988 due to erosion on the tip of Pea Island. A new station was built across the inlet on the end of Bodie Island adjacent to a fishing center marina. A rock groin built to protect the southern base of Bonner Bridge caused sand to accumulate on Pea Island, cancelling the threat to the century-old station. (Winston-Salem Journal/David Rolfe)
