ABOUT THIS STORY
Nearly a month has passed since the board of the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, in a private session, fired Lacy Ward Jr., the man hired just six months earlier to help secure its future. Ward’s departure and the reaction from civic and museum leaders created a greater fissure in the already fractured relationships on the board and between the museum and some people in the Greensboro community. And it introduced new, lingering and largely unanswered questions about the museum’s future.
The News & Record contacted dozens of people who had some access to board meetings and museum activities. But no one — including Ward — has been willing to discuss for attribution answers about what they know of these events. Some of them did provide as background material details that the News & Record — in contrast to its policy for granting anonymity to sources — weaves into this report about events related to Ward’s firing.
