Betty Carpenter Obituary
A life devoted to love.
Betty Ann Carpenter passed October 14, 2026 at Friends Homes West skilled nursing facility after a nearly four year's stay, surrounded by the kind of love, warmth and compassion she so freely gave others-with her husband, sons, family, and dear friends by her side in her final days.
Born in Jacksonville, IL and raised in nearby Quincy, Betty Ann McAllister was the youngest of four. She loved her siblings, parents and extended family dearly. An insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge led to academic excellence in her early life that blossomed into a career of compassionate service that touched the lives of thousands of students like herself.
After earning degrees in education, Betty taught elementary school in Nashville, TN, and in Missoula, MT, before starting a 33-year career at UNCG Ashby Residential College. She served as academic advisor and held the title of assistant director when she retired in 2005. There she helped countless students navigate their way in academic careers and beyond. Her love and care for them was pure, authentic, and limitless. They were more than students. They were family. She became friends with many of the spouses, significant others, and children of alumni, and remained in touch during retirement. She especially enjoyed the UNCG bi-annual weekend retreats to the Valle Cruces conference center.
Above all else, Betty was devoted to sons Jason and Michael, from her 20-year first marriage to James C. Carpenter, and her three grandchildren, Calvin, Hazel, and Felix-all currently living in Santa Monica, California. Betty instilled deep and abiding values in her sons, mainly through modeling. This included honesty, compassion, service, and generosity, which served as a foundation for living meaningful lives. Her passion for life and love succeeds her.
Betty and Steve Cole met in 1990, quickly forming a bond that led to 36 years of laughter, love and companionship, including daily Friends Home visits with her mini Goldendoodle Annie, a 2024 Valentine Day gift from Steve that brought great joy and comfort. Betty and Steve's shared affinity for art, film, music and the natural world led them on many adventures. Together they cultivated close friendships with many and their home became a gathering place for lively discussion and excellent food.
Whether known as Betty, Marma, or Mama Carp, her table was always open, and open to all. The spread was always something to behold, and no one left hungry. A prolific baker, her house was a favorite stop of Jason and Michael's friends and many others.
Betty's generosity of her time and service extended to political action. Fiercely dedicated to equal rights for all, funding for education and social services, in addition to other causes, she volunteered inordinate amounts of time to the Democratic party and Greensboro headquarters-making calls, knocking on doors, driving people to polls and more. In 2008 she registered more people to vote than any other individual in NC which earned her a one-on-one photo op with then Presidential candidate Barack Obama-a photo she later displayed proudly in her room at Friends Homes.
The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff at Friends Home West for their empathetic and compassionate care, with special thanks to medical director Dr. Anjalai Gupta and nurses Christa Williamson and Christy Davis, both of whom showered their love on Betty and Steve's dog Annie every time she entered the facility, always greeting her with treats and enthusiastic playfulness. Further thanks go out to social worker Bobetta Waynick, nurses Banyele Imbolo and Godwin Umunna, along with so many others. Betty shared loving relationships with countless Friends Homes caregivers to whom we will forever be indebted. Among them was Ine Noe, a frequent visitor who brought newspapers, magazines, and love to Betty's room. We love you all.
Betty. Marma. Grandma. Mother and friend to so many. Go forth with our love.
